Dinopalooza is back and bigger than ever! Come celebrate SUE at this Museum-wide dinosaur extravaganza featuring Field scientists sharing their work, paleoart crafts, face painting, special tours, and so much more!&nbsp;
This year the Field Museum is partnering with iHeart Radio to bring Dino Derby to the Museum&rsquo;s North Lawn! Dino Derby is a foot race for SUE wanna-bes to see who can win the title of SUEpreme speedster.&nbsp;
Children are invited to race in their favorite dino-mite outfits! Be it their favorite triceratops hat or a full costume. The children&rsquo;s race begins at 11am.&nbsp;
At 1PM, adults will get the chance to duke it out dino style - that is, in full inflatable dinosaur suits. The fastest dino will receive a $1,000 cash prize!&nbsp;
Admission to the Dinopalooza festival is included in a general admission ticket to the museum. All Dino Derby participants must separately pre-register to race. See iHeart Radio&rsquo;s webpage for full details.

For this week's PlayLab PlayDate, families with 2-6-year-olds are invited to a free, drop-in storytime celebrating SUE the Tyrannosaurus rex. The Field Museum's beloved T.rex, SUE was first exhibited to guests 25 years ago on May 17, 2000! Join us for an interactive read aloud, celebrating SUE, the most complete T.rex ever discovered.&nbsp;
This storytime kicks off our "Summer of SUE" storytime series, which will take place on the first Wednesday of June, July, and August.&nbsp;

<h3>About Kevin Feldheim</h3>

Kevin Feldheim is the A. Watson III Manager of the Pritzker Laboratory for Molecular Systematics and Evolution. His research focuses on inferring the mating system and population biology of sharks using genetic markers called microsatellites, although he is broadly interested in many organisms. He holds degrees from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

This event is being held in conjunction with the Field Museum&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/activity/pride-month">Pride Month</a> programming.

Dive into the wild world of shark genetics with <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/about/staff/profile/kevin-feldheim">Kevin Feldheim</a>, the A. Watson III Manager of the Pritzker Laboratory for Molecular Systematics and Evolution at the Field Museum. Since 2001, Kevin has been unraveling the mysteries of shark mating systems and population dynamics through cutting-edge genetic research. His latest deep-sea adventure? Exploring the fascinating phenomenon of parthenogenesis&mdash;a form of asexual reproduction&mdash;in sharks and rays. Partnering with aquariums around the country, he's investigating how this rare reproductive strategy could shape the future of conservation efforts for these awe-inspiring creatures. Kevin holds degrees from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Against the Current

Adam Brumm is a professor of archaeology at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia. His contributions to the field span 21 years of research in Indonesia, including extensive fieldwork on Flores and Sulawesi, two islands that loom large in our understanding of early humans. In Flores, his team unearthed fossils of archaic hominins that are the oldest found on the island and seem to represent a form ancestral to the celebrated 'Hobbit' (Homo floresiensis). In Sulawesi, his discoveries, with numerous colleagues, of a series of 'ice age' cave paintings were deemed to be among the top 10 scientific breakthroughs of the year on two occasions (2014 and 2019) by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Brumm completed his PhD at the Australian National University in 2007 and has since held several postdoctoral research fellowships, including at the University of Cambridge.

The Leakey Foundation and the Field Museum, in collaboration with the Chicago Council on Science and Technology, present a lecture with Professor Adam Brumm, professor of archaeology and founding member of the Australian Research Centre for Human Evolution at Griffith University.
<h3>First Stories: The Ice Age Art of Sulawesi</h3>
In the 1950s, the discovery of prehistoric rock art was reported for the first time on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. These images were found in limestone caves in the karst hills of Maros-Pangkep. At the time, it was believed this art had been left by early Neolithic farmers, making them about 4,000 years old. However, in 2014, an Australian-Indonesian team dated the Maros-Pangkep art for the first time using a uranium-series analysis of natural mineral coatings that had formed on some of the images. The earliest dated image yielded a minimum age of 40,000 years, making it compatible with cave art in Spain, the oldest known art in the world at the time. The Sulawesi art challenged the long-accepted story that the birthplace of human art and culture had been in Europe. The earliest painting, with a minimum age of 51, 200 years, is a scene portraying human-like figures interacting with a pig. It is the oldest cave art attributed to humans and the earliest known examples of visual storytelling in the world, providing crucial insights into the development of human cognition.&nbsp;

Meet scientists spearheading research on the most remote continent on Earth, explore extreme weather gear used by scientists in Antarctica, and watch movie screenings of Dinosaurs of Antarctica 3D for free!&nbsp;

<h3>Movie Screenings</h3>

Dinosaurs of Antarctica 3D tells the story of a changing environment at the bottom of the world where dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures once roamed freely in a lush landscape. As the climate changes again today, melting Antarctic ice is allowing discovery of the continent&rsquo;s history&mdash;including the fossils of new dinosaurs. Limited tickets will be available onsite for free screenings of Dinosaurs of Antarctica; advance ticket registration is not available.&nbsp;

<li>Dinosaurs of Antarctica will be shown in James Simpson Theatre at 10:30am, 1:15pm, and 3:30pm.</li>
<li>Greg Neri will lead Q &amp; A sessions only after the 10:30am and 1:15pm showings.</li>

Stay after the movie to take part in exclusive Q &amp; A sessions with Greg Neri, award-winning author of My Antarctica: True Adventures in the Land of Mummified Seals, Space Robots, and So Much More. In 2017, G. Neri was awarded the first of two National Science Foundation grants that sent him to Antarctica. He is currently co-chair of the Antarctic Artists and Writers Collective, and in 2023, he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from SUNY for his literary and Antarctic outreach.&nbsp;

For this week's PlayLab PlayDate, families with 2-6 year olds are invited to a free, drop-in storytime session celebrating Juneteenth. Throughout this interactive read aloud, a guest reader from the museum will share more about the significance and history of Juneteenth.

The&nbsp;Crown Family PlayLab&nbsp;offers families with 2-6 year olds a weekly PlayLab PlayDate on most Wednesdays. PlayLab PlayDates are free, drop-in activities featuring storytime sessions, music and movement circles, science experiments and more.

This week there will be a special Monday storytime session in honor of Pollinator Week (June 16 to 22). Families with 2-6 year olds are invited to a free, drop-in storytime session hosted by Librarian Megan, alongside a Field Museum pollinator expert, Nicole. Join us as we read about native pollinators, and learn about what can be done to help them.&nbsp;

Adult monarch butterflies can be spotted around the garden in the summer. In addition to milkweed, they eat the nectar of flowers like coneflower, or Echinacea.

Field Family Nights

See live specimens of arachnids (spiders and Opiliones or &ldquo;daddy long-legs&rdquo;) and learn about their ecology, behavior, and biomechanics from the scientists who study them. Discover the critical role these common animals play in the environment and what we can do to protect them.

Frank Robb&mdash;widely known as &ldquo;Alligator Robb&rdquo;&mdash;is a renowned wildlife and crocodilian expert from Florida&rsquo;s Space Coast. He serves as President of Environmental Education Awareness Research Support and Services (<a href="http://eearss.org/">EEARSS.ORG</a>&nbsp;), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that champions environmental education, biodiversity studies, and cutting-edge cancer research focused on environmental toxicology. He is best known in Chicago for safely capturing &ldquo;Chance the Snapper,&rdquo; the alligator that made national headlines after appearing in a Humboldt Park lagoon.
Come meet Frank and learn how, in partnership with the Wise Laboratory of Environmental and Genetic Toxicology at the University of Louisville, he is conducting field research along Florida&rsquo;s Space Coast, capturing and testing alligators to assess how environmental exposures are impacting both animal and human health.

On May 21, 2025, the Women's Board of the Field Museum will welcome Sera Young, PhD as its annual Women in Science Luncheon speaker.

Dr. Young is a Professor of Anthropology and Global Health at Northwestern University, and she has dedicated her career to understanding how women work to preserve their health and that of their families. Her research focuses on maternal and child undernutrition in the first 1,000 days of life, particularly in low-resource settings.

Notably, Dr. Young led a large team in the development of the first globally equivalent way of measuring water access &ndash; the WISE (Water InSecurity Experiences) Scales. These scales have been used by 100+ organizations in 50+ countries to tackle some of the world&rsquo;s most pressing health challenges.

She has authored more than 170 peer-reviewed publications, and her work has been featured in The New York Times, BBC, and National Geographic. Recent accolades include the Margaret Mead Award for her book Craving Earth, an Andrew Carnegie Fellowship, and the Norman Kretchmer Memorial Award in Nutrition and Development.
