Meet a Scientist

<p><strong>Heaven Wade</strong> is a fourth-year PhD student in Integrated Biomedical Science at Rush University. Heaven gained early research experience through an internship in the Botany Department at the Field Museum, where she worked from high school through college. She later completed a post-baccalaureate fellowship at the Field Museum, contributing to the development of a global consortium of bryophytes and lichens, while also working on machine-learning-based Zooniverse projects. Looking ahead, Heaven aspires to pursue a career in biomedical science, with the ultimate goal of addressing healthcare disparities through impactful research.</p>

<p><strong>Jaylen Thomas</strong> earned her Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in Human Biology from Michigan State University and discovered her passion for food science while working in food and beverage testing. She went on to earn a Master&rsquo;s degree in Food Safety and Technology from the Illinois Institute of Technology and began her product development career at Conagra Brands, working on Duncan Hines cakes and frostings.<br />She now works at Ferrara Candy Company, where she focuses on innovation and replacing artificial colors with natural alternatives as part of the Natural Colors Task Force. Outside of work, Jaylen enjoys creating handmade candles and body butters, applying her product development skills to personal projects.</p>

<p><strong>TaAqua Campbell</strong>, a native of Chicago, IL, is Sr. Manager, R&amp;D at Ferrara. TaAqua attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she earned a B.S. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering. Her specialization is in food processing applications, such as manufacturing control processes, food safety and quality system design. Specifically, she loves working with food; not only for nourishment, but also to promote good health. TaAqua has spent over 20 years in the food industry working at various Consumer Packaged Goods companies, including Newly Weds Foods, PepsiCo and currently, Ferrara. &nbsp;TaAqua has a passion for giving back and has volunteered with various mentor programs over the last 25 years. One of her favorite quotes is &ldquo;We should all be concerned about the future because we have to live there&rdquo;. That quote resonates with TaAqua's purpose in mentoring the youth in STEM as they are the future designers of this world, and they hold the vision to make this world better. TaAqua is dedicated to helping young people by instilling in them encouragement and focus to realize their dreams.</p>

<p><strong>Socorra Kinney</strong> is a Food Scientist specializing in Rapid Prototyping within Ferrara&rsquo;s Breakthrough Innovation Team. She holds both a Master&rsquo;s and a Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois at Urbana&ndash;Champaign. Her professional experience spans across roles at Griffith Foods, Glanbia Performance Nutrition, and currently Ferrara Candy Company, with a focus on product development in the food industry. Born and raised in the South Suburbs of Chicago, Socorra&rsquo;s passion for food and creativity have shaped the career she proudly pursues today.</p>

<p><strong>Sam Weed</strong> leads Ferrara&rsquo;s North American Consumer Affairs team across Chicago and Pennsylvania. Inspired by food innovation, Sam consistently partners with the Transformational Innovation team to test and refine new candy formulations.</p>

<p><strong>Kris Nance</strong> is a Senior Associate Brand Manager at Ferrara for the Trolli brand, where he currently leads strategy, communications, and portfolio management. Over his six years at Ferrara, he has held key roles across Brand Marketing and Category Management, driving innovation pipelines for iconic brands including NERDS and Brach&rsquo;s. In addition to his experience as a Brand Manager, Kris previously served as Co‑Chair of Ferrara&rsquo;s Black Employee Resource Group.</p>

<p><strong>Christina Kilgore</strong> is the Senior Manager of Global Consumer Affairs with experience guiding teams through international launches, complex challenges, including acquisitions, recalls, and large-scale operational change. Known for her thoughtful, data-informed approach and people-first leadership style, she focuses on building clear processes, developing talent, and making decisions that protect consumers and earn trust. Christina volunteers to share real-world career insight, encourage confidence, and help others see what&rsquo;s possible beyond a job title.</p>

<p><strong>Rene Poellinetz</strong> is a Senior Manager in our International Sales Operations teams. Her mission is to connect our products to consumers across the globe, spreading joy with every piece of candy consumed. In addition to her primary role, she also serves as the Co-Chair of the Black Employee Business Resource Group at Ferrara.</p>

<h2>Keynote</h2>

<p>On May 21, 2025, the Women's Board of the Field Museum will welcome <span>Sera Young, PhD </span>as its annual Women in Science Luncheon speaker.</p>

<p>Dr. Young is a Professor of Anthropology and Global Health at Northwestern University, and she has dedicated her career to understanding how women work to preserve their health and that of their families. Her research focuses on maternal and child undernutrition in the first 1,000 days of life, particularly in low-resource settings.</p>

<p>Notably, Dr. Young led a large team in the development of the first globally equivalent way of measuring water access &ndash; the WISE (Water InSecurity Experiences) Scales. These scales have been used by 100+ organizations in 50+ countries to tackle some of the world&rsquo;s most pressing health challenges.</p>

<p>She has authored more than 170 peer-reviewed publications, and her work has been featured in The New York Times, BBC, and National Geographic. Recent accolades include the Margaret Mead Award for her book Craving Earth, an Andrew Carnegie Fellowship, and the Norman Kretchmer Memorial Award in Nutrition and Development.</p>

<p>Moderated by Aimee Davis, Senior Director of the Sue Ling Gin Center for Education and Public Programs</p>
<p>Bob Weis is a dreamer who believes that if you can imagine it, you can do it. He was an Imagineer over a forty-year span, from 1980 to 2023. In those years, Bob worked on every Disney park and resort around the world. He was president of Walt Disney Imagineering from 2016 to 2022, and a Disney Global Imagineering Ambassador after that.</p>
<p>His passion for storytelling and creative collaboration, new technologies, and for the vibrancy of the guest experience has driven him through projects from Tokyo Disneyland (and later its accompanying park, Tokyo DisneySea) and Disney Hollywood Studios to the reinvention of Disney California Adventure and on to Shanghai Disneyland.</p>
<p>Dream Chasing is his recounting of four decades of creating and seeing to completion challenging projects, leading teams from the top secret, high-tech corridors of Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) to the highest levels of The Walt Disney Company.</p>

<p>Imagine what it would feel like to stand next to a <em>T. rex.</em> Ponder what flowers smelled like 30 million years ago. See what inspiration you'll find and start turning your ideas into poetry with Eric Elshtain, the Field Museum's first poet in residence.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Join us for a series of weekly events that change how you see the museum—whether you’ve visited once or dozens of times. Encounter objects from our collection. Tour an exhibition. Find our poet in residence at a typewriter station to craft your own poem!</p>
<p>Eric hosts pop-ups most Thursdays from 10am–12pm, in locations across the museum. No prior knowledge of poetry needed. &nbsp;</p>

<p>You&rsquo;ve Asked, We&rsquo;ve Listened! In this workshop, educators will explore how geometry and mathematical patterns are embedded in the biomechanics of living systems. Using the <em>Biomechanics: The Machine Inside</em> exhibition as a case study, participants will examine lines of symmetry, shape, proportion, and structure as tools for understanding movement, adaptation, and survival in the natural world.</p>
<p>Designed with middle school learners in mind, this experience highlights how geometric concepts, especially lines of symmetry, can be observed, discussed, and extended across grade levels from PreK through 12th grade. Educators will engage in observation-based strategies that mirror student experiences and consider how museum spaces can support math instruction through real-world, data-rich phenomena.</p>

<p>Come meet Field Museum Collections staff Chris Philipp and Julia Kennedy as they discuss rarely-displayed masks from the A.B. Lewis collection, new contemporary items, and various media from the Field's Papua New Guinea collection. At nearly 35,000 items, the Field Museum cares for the largest collection of material from the country of Papua New Guinea currently in the United States.</p>
<p>This session is the third in a series that celebrates <em>Wan Bel: a PNG Collective Global Exhibition</em>, commemorating the country of Papua New Guinea's 50th Anniversary of Independence.</p>

<p>Free Wednesdays are the perfect opportunity for you to explore our basic admission exhibitions with your family or a group of science-loving friends. Adventure through the wilderness on a desert safari, explore ancient civilizations, and come face-to-face with prehistoric creatures&mdash; all in one place. The Field Museum has so much to explore, you&rsquo;ll need more than just a day to see it all. <span>But don&rsquo;t worry&mdash;Wednesdays are free for Illinois Residents.</span></p>
<p>Tickets for Free Days are only available to Illinois residents. For your convenience, free day tickets are available for advanced reservation online. Please present your proof of Illinois residency alongside your mobile tickets for express admission into the Museum. Tickets will also be available onsite subject to availability. Reservations are strongly recommended.</p>

<h2>Proof of Residency</h2>
<p><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">Tickets for Free Wednesdays are only available to Illinois residents. </span>No special coupon, ticket, or pass is required to enter the Museum during Free Admission Days. Just present a current Illinois driver's license, state ID, or Chicago CityKey card at the ticket desk to establish proof of residency. If you do not have an Illinois identification card, you may establish residency by showing a valid photo ID along with one of the following:</p>

<li>Illinois library card</li>
<li>Illinois student ID with photo</li>
<li>Illinois utility bill</li>
<li>Illinois work ID and check stub</li>
</ul>
<h2>Museums for All</h2>
<p>Can't make it on a free day? We offer <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/visit#special-offers">Museums for All and other discounts</a> all year long.</p>
<p>Families who qualify for state food assistance can receive $3-per-person Basic admission for up to six people. Just show an EBT (Link) or WIC card when you purchase tickets at the museum. You cannot take advantage of this special offer when buying tickets online.</p>

<p>Calling all junior herpetologists! Slide into the <em>Crown Family PlayLab</em> for a fun-filled morning of hands-on reptile exploration and discovery.</p>
<p>Designed especially for <strong>children ages 5-6 and their caregivers</strong>, this engaging program brings our special exhibit <em>Reptiles Alive!</em> to life through play-based scientific exploration and discovery. Together, you will get up close with real specimens, craft your own reptile-inspired creations, and explore what makes these scaly creatures so amazing!</p>
<p>Come ready to wonder, wiggle, and learn. It's going to be reptile-tastic!</p>
