Calumet Plant ID Series Trains Local Plant Enthusiasts

Laura Milkert, Conservation Ecology Manager, Keller Science Action Center

"It is the perfect combination of learning on several levels with the experts: exploring a corner of Chicago…and learning about the natural world." That is how one participant described ECCo's Calumet Plant Identification Class Series.  These field experiences provide plant enthusiasts the opportunity to learn local trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses. Instructor Margo Milde shares her rich botanical knowledge with students, teaching participants the characteristics of the many different species in the prairies and woodlands of Calumet. Throughout the summer, community members have visited several natural areas and have enjoyed the opportunity to fine-tune their plant identification skills. These lessons also connect to ecological restoration and how to best care for and manage natural areas. Two more classes are slated for August and September.
