As part of Native American Heritage Month, join us for an evening conversation with James Johnson. James will discuss his artistic practice, the importance of preserving traditional Tlingit ways of creating, and how he draws on the knowledge and work of his ancestors in his contemporary practice.

James Johnson is an award-winning Tlingit Artist and Carver, born and raised in Juneau, AK. He belongs to the Tlingit Ch’áak’ Dakl’aweidi Clan (Eagle Killerwhale). James is a multi-disciplinary artist but specializes in Tlingit formline design, with a focus on traditional wood carving. Carving is an integral part of the preservation of Tlingit history and culture. “Carving is our visual language that represents who the Tlingit people are, and how we live in balance with all things.” James’s contemporary practice builds upon an indigenous artistic continuum while honoring the culture and its rich traditions.

This event takes place on a Legendary Late Hours day and is included with admission. The event takes place in the Montgomery Ward Lecture Hall, on the lower level.

Tlingit Artist James Johnson: Haa Shagoon—The Path Forward

The Field Museum is thrilled to announce the acquisition of James Johnson’s Bear Tunic, the winner of four prizes from the 2026 Sealaska Celebration Juried Art Show, including Best of Show. The piece, a hand sewn garment made from black bear hide and hand painted formline design, was originally inspired by a Tlingit bear tunic in the Field Museum collections, acquired from James’ ancestral village in 1902. The work represents both James’ talent and his commitment to the study and teaching of traditional formline design. As he puts it “To be a Tlingit artist is a gift. This gift was given to me by my ancestors. They placed this in my hands for a reason. I’m carrying this gift throughout my lifetime, then when it’s my time, I’ll pass it on to the next…The youth are such a driving force, they are powerful, they are our future.” The tunic will remain on display at the Sealaska Heritage Institute through December 2026.

Join the Field Museum for Talk Story: Pacific and Filipino Voices in the Museum, a conversation with Field Museum staff and Filipino American community partners about the importance of collaboration, shared knowledge, and community voices in museum work.
Drawing from partnerships connected to the Museum’s Pacific and Filipino collections, panelists will explore what collaboration looks like in practice—from collections care and interpretation to education and community engagement—and how these relationships can create new opportunities for people to connect with their histories and heritage.
The conversation will also reflect on lessons learned, unexpected discoveries, and how museums can continue building trust and creating meaningful ways for communities to engage with collections.
This event will take place in Ward Hall on the lower level and is part of our celebration of Filipino American Heritage Month.
