Conserving Wildlife and Culture in Guyana, the Land of the Giants

Come join Dr. Stephen Mahony to learn more about new species of frogs that were recently discovered in the Field Museum's Herpetology collection. Visitors will learn more about the importance of museum collections regarding the discovery of new species, including how new species are discovered, the process of naming a new species, and why museum specimens are vital for our understanding of the world's biodiversity.
Scientists, researchers, and collections managers are behind the scenes every day, uncovering new information and taking care of our collection.
During Meet a Scientist, you can find them in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/exhibitions/grainger-science-hub">Grainger&nbsp;Science Hub</a>. They'll discuss their work and share real items from the museum&rsquo;s collection of nearly 40 million objects. From collections care to field work, and dinosaurs to ecology, there&rsquo;s a world of science to explore.

In this virtual professional development workshop designed to help educators meet the new requirements of the TEAACH Act, attendees will explore salient points and places with which to begin teaching Asian American community history with a focus on the history of Chicago's Native Hawaiian community. On May 14, 2024, the Women's Board of the Field Museum will welcome conservation photojournalist Ami Vitale as its annual Women in Science Luncheon speaker.

Ami Vitale is a Nikon Ambassador and National Geographic photographer, writer, speaker and documentary filmmaker, and she has been named one of the most influential photographers of her generation. She has traveled to more than 100 countries, documenting the heartbreaking realities of war and the inspiring power of individuals making a difference.

Throughout the years, Ami has lived in mud huts and war zones, contracted malaria, and donned a panda suit&mdash; keeping true to her belief in the importance of &ldquo;living the story.&rdquo; Her award-winning work illuminates the unsung heroes and communities working to protect wildlife and preserve harmony in our natural world.

The Field Museum is excited to kick off its second year of After School Science Club programming influenced by scientists, research, and collections at the Field Museum. Students explore Zoology and conservation efforts by learning about how scientists at the Field Museum helped save the Peregrine Falcon from extinction.
This is a FREE 10+ hour hands on learning curriculum that includes materials and professional development for club leaders! We&rsquo;re looking for educators and instructors who are interested in learning more about implementing this program in the Summer 2024 and/or the 2024-2025 school year. This is where you come in!

For this week's PlayLab PlayDate, families with 2-6 year olds are invited to a free, drop-in, bilingual storytime session hosted by the Chicago Public Library (CPL). Throughout this interactive read aloud, CPL readers will feature stories honoring <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/activity/aanhpi">Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander</a> Month.
Programming takes place on a Wednesday, which is free for Illinois residents. Visitors must show proof of residency.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/our-events/free-wednesdays">Learn more</a>.

The A. Watson Armour III Seminar Series is a weekly seminar highlighting the research of science professionals across a broad spectrum of scientific interests, disciplines, and lived experiences. This series connects the Field Museum&rsquo;s research, collections, conservation, and associated community with professionals at the forefront of life, geophysical, and social sciences. Lectures are open to the public and regularly highlight or complement research conducted by Field Museum staff and affiliates.

<h2>About the Parker/Gentry Award</h2>

The Parker/Gentry Award was established in 1996, named after late conservationists Theodore A. Parker III and Alwyn Gentry. The award recognizes individuals, teams, or organizations in conservation whose efforts have made a significant impact on preserving the world's natural heritage and whose approach can serve as a model to others. Each year, a committee of Field scientists reviews nominees and selects an awardee whose methods can inspire and guide others. Put on your best superhero gear and work together to thwart a mysterious supervillain&rsquo;s nefarious plan before the end of the night. Learn about wildlife conservation and how you can become a friendly neighborhood hero. Plus, get to know the super animals that inspired some of your favorite superheroes. Finally, gather on the museum terrace for a spectacular view of the fireworks over Navy Pier (weather permitting)!

Trick-or-treat yourself to a night at the Field Museum! This not-so-scary after hours event will be a scream for Halloween enthusiasts of all ages. Ghosts, ghouls, and other guests will get up close and personal with creepy crawlers, conduct their own owl pellet dissection, explore fascinating exhibits, and learn about spooky specimens in our collection from our team of mad scientists.

They'll discuss their work and share real items from the museum&rsquo;s collection of nearly 40 million objects. From collections care to field work, and dinosaurs to ecology, there&rsquo;s a world of science to explore.

Abbott Laboratories' Women in STEM scientists visit the Grainger Science Hub to discuss glucose levels in our food, and how we measure the blood glucose levels in our bodies. Abbott's Women in STEM scientists will also share their educational and career journeys with those aspiring to study or work in the sciences.
