About this event

Celebrate the Summer of SUE with a special Meet a Scientist event featuring two fossil preparators who helped uncover the Field Museum’s most iconic specimens!

Meet Akiko Shinya, Chief Preparator, Fossil Vertebrates and Connie VanBeek, Preparator, Fossil Vertebrates, as they share insights into the similarities and differences of preparing the Field Museum’s most iconic fossils–SUE the T. rex and the Chicago Archaeopteryx

What was it like to work on SUE the T. rex and how did this work change 25 years later when preparing the Chicago Archaeopteryx? Learn about the role of the fossil preparator and see some of the unique tools they use when preparing fossils.

This event is part of Summer of SUE - celebrating 25 years of SUE the T. rex at the Field Museum. Check out the rest of the SUE-lebrations we have planned for this summer!

During Meet a Scientist, you can find them in the Grainger Science Hub. They'll discuss their work and share real items from the museum’s collection of nearly 40 million objects. From collections care to field work, and dinosaurs to ecology, there’s a world of science to explore.

Visit the Science Hub on select weekdays for an up-close look at what our researchers do every day.
